Overdoz & Friends: Rise of The DEST 2 Coming 1.31.12

Overdoz's first show at The Roxy in Los Angeles a few month's ago was a success to say the least. On Tuesday January 31, 2012 the DESTED collective will hit the stage once again with Rise of The Dest 2 and this time expect the unexpected. Special guests include one of my favorite artists, Iman Omari, young up and comer Buddy, Chill Black Guys and more. Guests could include Nipsey Hussle, who is supposed to announce himself signing to MMG this week. Also Overdoz fan, Pharrell Williams, who has been very supportive of the movement. They were recently in the studio with that pretty motherfucka A$AP Rocky. Maybe even V-Nasty. All speculation aside, these guys are making a name for themselves quick. Don't miss this DESTED show at the famous Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Next In Show will have a review for you in case you don't live in sunny Southern California.

Flatbush Zombies - Thug Waffles [Video]

We have been featuring some great music from Brooklyn, NY artists. I was recently turned on to Flatbush Zombies from a friend and was immediately intrigued. Zombies consists of heavily sedated lyrical geniuses Meech & Juice. They serve up some obscure imagery for the masses with Thug Waffles. Check out the visual below.

"Local's Only" - Pasadena, CA. - Deezy / King Shortshitt [Video]

This week we are in Pasadena, CA. City of Roses, where it seems like there is a pretty serious community of artists. The city is known as the homebase of the nations Rose Parade, held every year on New Years Day, but tap into the music and arts scene and you will discover that the city has much more to offer. I am meeting so many talented artists out here, I hope to feature them all, but for now we have an exclusive interview with poet Deezy and rapper King Shortshitt. New talent for the next generation. S/O to DJ DVMBASS for the cameo. Mellowhype 2012! Also be sure to check another local rapper OhJay we recently interviewed. Lots of talent. Great things coming soon from this town. #nextinshow

Video was conceived by Syd Tha Kid and Matt Martin and directed by #nextinshow Director Matt Alonzo. This group is nothing like it's parent group, Odd Future. Maybe some inspiration from the Neptunes. First glance and Syd, you wouldn't expect such a powerful voice. It works out. She also got the cover and featured in LA Weekly in their most recent issue.

He is donating all sales to a charity. National MS Society to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis, which he discusses in the interview. Last month he showed up on the famous online gossip blog Media Take Out and is now being tested in this industry. Real recognize real. He will prevail. Take a break from the violence and check out this real interview with Nixon Nyce. #nextinshow

Nixon Nyce x Next In Show Interview

Your from Boston. What music did you listen to growing up?

I grew up listening to a lot of r&b. Bell Biv Devoe, Az Yet, and Soul 4 Real caught my attention early on. My older cousin had Dr. Dre - Chronic album around the house so I'd listen to it whenever he left home. Other then that, Snoop Dogg, Jermaine Dupri, and Ma$e were always being played in my house.

I know they say that any press is good press. You ended up on Mediatakeout.com (gossip blog) what do you think about that press?

It's really a gift & a curse. It blew my mind that I was on the site with my good friend Lindsay Faulk. The stuff they reported on the site was innacurate but it opened up an opportunity for people to want to know about me.

How did you get involved in music?

I got involved when I was in high school. I wanted to be the next Cash Money & Bad Boy Records CEO. The artists I dealt with back then weren't as serious as I was so I'd create mixtapes and sell them for $5 to anyone and everyone who would buy it. Eventually I signed an indie deal with a local label that didn't work out so we parted ways. My mentor Bryiant Hood kept me on the move since then so it's all been a blessing.

Who was the first big name artist you opened for?

The first big name I opened for was Maino. It was actually a car show in New York City where Maino, Swizz Beatz, and Yung Berg were performing.

There are a lot of haters in the world. How do you stay motivated and ignore negativity?

The haters are always going to be on their job. That's what they're there for. I consider all haters as confused fans. There's too much love out here for me to pay any disgruntled individual any attention.

I think Benzino gave Boston a bad name back when he stirred up beef with Interscope. Since then, how do you think the rap/ hip hop scene for the city has changed?

I think it's changing for the positive. People like DJ Hustle Simmons who are on the radio give local artists a chance to be heard. A lot of bigger artists are taking notice of what the scene is becoming and they want to be apart of it. Of course there are still the (big ego I don't fuck with anyone) cliques but, the city is opening itself slowly but surely to new sounds and styles.

You have released numerous mixtapes out. Which is your favorite?

Right now, I don't have a favorite. Each mixtape documents different moments in my life. With each one, I've grown and been able to share what i've been through with the world.

What music are you playing on your iPod right now?

Drake, Jeezy, Ben Harper, HarborLights, & myself.

Who is your top 5 freshman list for 2012 in hip hop?

I can't remember who made it last year so forgive me if you're no longer a freshman but i'll say: Kendrick Lamar, Asap Rocky, Chip Tha Ripper, Machine Gun Kelly, & Reek Da Villian.

What are you currently working on?

We're working on my next single and mapping out where we want to go with it. I have a great team around me and great artists to help me bring the vision to fruition.

You have the song No Pain currently on iTunes. You also note that all sales will be donated to charity. What is the meaning for this and which charity are you dealing with?

No Pain came to life when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis last year. While on my hospital bed I learned a lot about others who are suffering and don't have a voice. I decided to reach out to the National MS Society and see how I could inspire others. Surprisingly, a lot of people around me didn't know what MS was so I felt it'd only be right to raise awareness for the disease and what the organization is doing to help. We put the record on iTunes and gave and are still giving 100% of sales to the society.

Your a role model to someone out there. What piece of advice could you give to that person?

I'd tell them to have faith in God and everything else will work itself out.

We appreciate your music and hope you continue to succeed in your bright future. See you at the top.

Lana Del Rey * Born To Die * Album Review

Lana Del Rey, formerly known as Lizzy Grant, has redefined herself as well as her music by releasing her debut album Born To Die. Recently on Saturday Night Live, Del Rey appeared on the late night show as the musical  performance. Although I thought her performance was spectacular and actually had substance, critics such as "self-proclaimed hipster" hahah NBC hahah news anchor hahah called it the worst musical guest ever for the show. A little harsh, but all press is good press. Brush that nonsense off and get ready to hear a real piece of work. #NEXTINSHOW I think I'm in love.

Lana Del Rey * Born To Die * Album Review

The opening track to the album is also the album title Born To Die. The visual leaked a couple weeks back and was nothing short of epic. From the orchestral productions to the Renaissance scenes of Lana on the throne, she is not afraid to step away from the norm. The song has an eerie feel to it, which gives me chills when I am experiencing. Production credits go to fellow producers Justin Parker and Robopop. The chillin speach in the background is credited to the band Mountain's Long Red. The sounds of the album are somewhat similar to that of Kanye West. I wonder if he contributed inspiration to Lana while creating this album?

On the the next track, as Off To The Races blends in transition. As the beat builds Lana's voice gets stronger and it almost sounds like a new white girl rap. "He doesn't mind I have a Las Vegas past. He doesn't mind I have a LA crass way about me/He loves me with every beat of his cocaine heart". Her dual voices and haunting imagery makes for a beautiful sound. Hip hop drum samples keeps the song relavant.

The songs Blue Jeans and Video Games both were obviously Lana Del Rey's claim to fame. Even more was that she never released the mp3 versions of the songs, but instead shot 2 visuals and created internet hysteria with them. Both songs have similar sounds and feel to it. I feel an old hollywood vibe and for some reason western movies keep popping up in my head. Video Games is a little less filled (production-wise) a simple harp and string section let Lana show off her vocals. Elvis meets Nancy Sinatra.

I figured it out. Throughout the album, unique soundbites are included on almost every song. This is one of Kanye's trademarks and that is where the inspiration comes from. That is exactly what takes place on the song Diet Mountain Dew. Works so well though. Since Del Rey recently signed to U.S. record label Interscope, she will have to get familiar with the sounds of hip hop. So far after listening to the album, I don't think she is far off. Im not a big fan of analyzing lyrics, but I think she is comparing Diet Mountain Dew to her man. She wants it so bad, but she shouldn't have it because it is bad for her. That's my attempt at decoding the interesting song title.

The next track is conveniently titled National Anthem, Although I think her national anthem is speaking of the power of money. Strings start off the with fireworks and a crowd in the background. When the dark hard-hitting drums come in, Lana begins her white girl rap. Her rapping resembles that of Bob Dylan or Johnny Cash's poetry. "Money is the anthem of success, so put on your mascara and party dress". Del Rey is an artist who doesn't seem interested in what money has to offer, but more interested in making a difference with her music.

Initially when I went to play album, the songs were out of order and this next track Dark Paradise happened to come on. At first listen, I instantly fell in love with it. I guess you could call it a freak accident. This track slightly resembles Born To Die with her trademarked wordplay. I can't get over how Lana mixes dark sounds of the orchestra and combines it with uptempo neck breaking drum kits. "Everytime I close my eyes, it's like a dark paradise, no one compares to you but there's no you, except in my dreams tonight". Heartbreak music at its best.

Radio is another hit record. "Baby love me cause I'm playing on the radio". Who is she trying to prove herself to? It's a catchy tune. Her lyrics have the heart of a lion. What I mean by that is you can always feel the emotion in her lyrics, whether it's a simple chorus like this or one of her more complex songs like Blue Jeans.

Who is Carmen? Lana dedicated this entire track to a woman Carmen. The tempo changes from slow head swaying to straight up two step head bouncing. Del Rey seems to be referring to the ideal woman that all girls want to be like; beatiful, successful and loves to party. If you listen close towards the end of the song, you can hear a woman speaking french in a low voice.

Million Dollar Man is one of the album's only legit ballads. This song is something I could see her playing at an open mic piano bar. Another old Hollywood vibe to it. Although you can hear ghostly sounds in the background, the typical drum kits are left out of the equation.

One reason why this album is so great is because of the next level production. Credit goes mainly to Robopop, Justin Parker and Emile. Summertime Sadness is another catchy record that will go nice in the pop world. This song is just another example of how it could be mistaken for a movie. The epic sounds and lyrical imagery is amazing.

This Is What Makes Us Girls is a tale of what Lana Del Rey was like as a  sweet 16'er. Having something to believe in was what you expected. This was a time in your life for not only girls but boys to, to feel like they can do anything. "This is what makes us girls, We don't look for heaven and we put our love first, don't you know we'd die for it? It's a curse, don't cry about it, don't cry about it, This is what makes us girls, darlin' little queens do you know what you're worth? I'll tell you everyday till you get it, girl it's all gonna happen".

Lana Del Rey's is making more than just music here. This album is a complete work of art. Each song is it's own movie. It will go down as one of the best albums of the year. Be sure to check out the Deluxe Edition, which includes 3 more amazingly done tracks. Tracks include Without You, Lolita (re recorded from a precvious ep, but sounds so much better) and Lucky Ones.

Stay tuned for February 7th when Next In Show covers a special in store performance by the beauty herself Lana Del Rey. #MusicIsMyLife

Grandmas And Videos. Oh Yeah And Usher. [Video]

was presented with this video of a grandma dancing to Usher's 'You Make Me Wanna'. Now if I had to rate her on a 1-10 scale I would definitely give g-ma the big 8 for effort on this. The other 2 points would be there if she were in costume haha, well there was the tie-dye shirt so hmmm. Ok, I give the video a 10. Grandma kills the dance and it's definitely not just floppy arms, she even has hops as she jumps out the chair. Just watch it

REST IN PEACE
JAMESETTA HAWKINS AKA 'ETTA JAMES'
JANUARY 25, 1938 - JANUARY 20, 2012

According to E! the late R&B great Etta James born Jamesetta Hawkins has succumb to leukemia in Southern California's Riverside Community Hospital. Diagnosed as terminally ill by a doctor two weeks prior the late James was able to be surrounded by the comfort of husband Artis Mills and sons. The singer most notably known for her hit "At Last" was in more recent times known for her minute dismay in Beyonce singing this same hit at the Obama inaugural ceremony. Nothing went past this except from kind words from James in regards to the talent of today's generation. Never a let down Etta James fought her tiny way to 73 years old, now that's a blessing. May you rest in peace Etta James.

Stop SOPA/PIPA Megaupload Back Online!

The popular uploading site Megaupload.com was shut down for federal officers early Thursday morning. Throughout the day major independent websites such as Wikipedia "went black" for 24hours in support against the bill. SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) main focus is making websites like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, CNET to be liable for everything their users post. A saying that I find fit for this is that, "You can extinguish a fire, but the ashes will still arise. There is no stopping this. I wonder how blogs or sites that offer free content for websites will be affected. Freedom to upload whatever we want will always be in the users control. Plus how can the bill pass when Obama himself just signed up for Instagram. jk. In all seriousness, this is a major issue and needs to be resolved immediately. I'm against piracy, but completely protest the idea of SOPA and PIPA (Protect IP Act). Take a stand. #nextinshow

An Ode To Street Drummers [Videos]

Oh the streets of the world, a wondrous realm of pervert and violent activity. Ridden of needles, prostitutes and hot dog vendors. Oft boasting the craziest drum sets anyone has ever seen. Oh how we love you, our dear streets. Home of the greatest drummers, we've ever seen.

Unfortunately there's no time to elaborate on the many aspects of your greatness so I must cease my desire and focus on the one facet all can cope with, the music you provide. You see the streets is also a canvas for many talented people; jugglers, pan handlers, pick pockets, sidewalk models and musicians. To say the least the musicians are usually the people you can bet your money on seeing as they are using their mind and body to release instead of the other crazy sh*t that goes on. I love the sounds of drums and I bet we can all agree there's nothing like a good sidewalk drummer playing the sickest drums buckets you've ever seen. I wish I could play the drums. Oh, well. Enjoy!
