Next In Show x Cocoa Sarai Exclusive Interview

There's a new girl in town and by the sounds of her new album, The Black & White, Cocoa Sarai won't be forgotten anytime soon. Miss Cocoa has a Bed Stuy attitude and the beauty of a goddess. Check out our exclusive interview with the pop diva, Cocoa Sarai.

Next InShow Presents Cocoa Sarai

Your name Cocoa Sarai is so unique. Where did it come from?
Well my mom called me Chocolate all my life because of my skin; in my old neighborhoodin Bed Stuy my friends still call me that. My middle name is Sarai we just putit together and you have Cocoa Sarai.
Is Brooklyn really it’s own country?

Of course, Brooklyn in its self is a very diverse and special place. It has anatmosphere. A heart beat. It's home! I definitely acquired the edginess in mymusic and personality from being raised in this country of Brooklyn lol...
You just released your new project, The Black & White on Catapult Records. What inspired this album?
But the album is available on iTunes. This album was definitelyinspired by life, transitions, self-realizations and colors. Almost everythingcan be interpreted that way. My mother passed away in November from lungcancer. Ironically my single "Raining In My Room” dropped the same week. Irecorded most of the album in 3 months. When I did my first album Half PastSeven I was definitely a girl still figuring out exactly what kind of person Iwas going to be, after your mother passes you put a lot of things ontoperspective. You figure out what's most important when you’re watching someonedeteriorate and you can't do anything about it. The term "The Black &White" took on a new meaning by the time the album was released. This iswhom I am, vulnerable, loving, hurting, and laughing strong. The music addscolor to this Black and White picture... There are stories on there thateverybody can relate to...

What producers did you work with?
Well * Rick Hertz * who is my partner mixed and mastered the project, heexecutive produced this album and my last album along with myself. He alsoproduced 3 songs on it "The Intro, Delete You & Anything ft. Fred DaGodson” Then there was * Jordan Ware * who is a master violinist and amazingproducer. He produced 3 songs as well "Criminal, Colours (interlude) andMemories 4 Suckers”. Singer/Rapper/Songwriter/Producer *Rich Lowe* produced 3songs as well "Love Feels Like, Black & Blue, 1 Second 2 Love"which he sang on and took part in writing. Last but not least * Jayd * whoproduced "Raining In My Room" and *Ant B.808 * who produced "LIVE”I wrote every song by myself except two that Rich Lowe and I wrote together.I'm blessed and honored to have worked with such amazingly talented people. They were all just as invested as I am in this project and the coolest set ofpeople ever.

All of the tracks on the albums fit perfect together. At the moment I amplaying Delete You on repeat. I can’t help but to get my groove on. Can youtalk about the evolution of the song?
Well I came up with the idea for it 2 years ago, I was fresh outof a relationship but we were still fooling around. The guy started to postpictures of him and other women as his profile pic on Facebook. Now I assureyou I am far from a stalker but anything he did would pop up on my news feed.My mom saw it one day and asked me "Who this chick?" Then I told herhim and I had broken up which meant nothing to her because he was still comingby the house...lol. I wanted to delete him but my pride wouldn't let me andapart of me wanted to know what he was doing.... That’s where the title camefrom. Fast forward to a year and a half later, Rick Hertz reminds me of therecord, he played the beat and I finished the song... I know that people relateto that one.... Uggghhh it was definitely coming from an honest place.

For your next project, if you could have one only one feature, who would it beand why?
It would be Kanye West, he's extremely creative and I believe we would makeamazing music.... Yup that's who it would be. There are more but you said nameone :-(

What music are you currently playing in heavy rotation?

Frank Ocean

Jhene Aiko
Queen
Rockie Evans

Stevie Wonder

How did it feel to be featured in the New York Times?
It was awesome, gaining any type of notoriety in your hometown solidifies thatI'm reaching people. I want to reach the world but having my city means thatI'm off to a good start. I would love to jump into the music scene in LA andwork with some of the artist there. :- )

You recently performed at the Mama Im’a Make It Showcase. How was it?
It was cool; the power of people is awesome. I was set to golast and the club had another party coming in after the show. So because theshow ran over by the time I was scheduled to perform, the soundman cut my Mic.The crowd got upset and I started to sing "Raining In My Room" whichis a crowd favorite, my beat boxer and drummer came in and the audience swayed, snapped and sang along. That moment of togetherness where angry faces turnedinto smiles was amazing....

What is coming up next for you?
The Black & White is officially out now!!! And BET MusicMatters on March 13th, which I'm extremely excited about. I have a 6-piece bandso this is going to be epic :-) A few music videos; the visuals from thisproject have to be mind blowing. Traveling the world and performing

Do you believe that everything happens for a reason?
Yes, whole-heartedly...good and bad

What is the most important lesson you have learned, since involved in the musicindustry?
That this is most definitely a business before anything else, that creativitydoes not come from us, it flows through us and that the moment I wascomfortable being myself, everyone else loved me....

Thanks for your time Cocoa. Your #nextinshow

Thank you so much for having me and finding me interestingenough to consider interviewing. I enjoyed answering the questions :-)

PS. please excuse any typos as I answering from my cell phone...

Octavia Spencer Win Best Actress Award At The Oscars Acceptance Speech [Video]

It goes without saying the amount of hard work Octavia Spencer has put into Hollywood. As an actress, writer, producer and director she has helped create well over 90 projects in her career. Who knew it would be the hilarious but serious Minnie from the book The Help that would give Octavia her chance to wow The Academy. Well it worked and last night Octavia Spencer ousted great opposition to win the Oscar for the Best Supporting Actress in a film for her role in The Help. The acceptance speech by far was one of the most genuine and most heart felt. She forgot to thank God though. Unfortunately her co-star Viola Davis was not fortunate enough to win losing out to Meryl Streep. Who didn't see that coming though.

Cris Cab' Is Miami's Hottest Talent 'Rihanna's Gun' Movado, Wyclef, Pharrell [Video]

Whoaaaaa, hold on a minute, wait a minute, stop the presses people, have you heard of Cris Cab? If not I would suggest you get familiar with the young 19 year old music phenom from Miami, Fl. In my own words the kid is a Jason Meraz esque crooner with the Bruno Mars serious which plays perfectly into his genre of hiphop/reggae and the newly hot dub-step genre. Wait, there's more. His new mixtape was produced by Wycelf Jean and features his own versions of the hits 'All of the Lights' by Kanye West, 'Pumped Up Kicks' by Foster the People and the Movado and Wyclef backed hit 'Rihanna's Gun' which a reply to her late single 'Man Down'. But wait, there's more. Pharell is his mentor and oversee's his performances and has open doors including a showcase for music head honchos from Universal Motown and Warner Music Group.

“Wyclef is just so energetic and supportive. And Pharrell is like my big brother.”  Cab said after a recent Miami performance. “I don’t shy away from where I’m from and it’s good to represent Miami,”

A hot visual for Rihanna's Gun was just released and it show's his charismatic control of the stage and his audience. You can see the ambition in his face when he belts out his reggae 'yeahs' and his passion for real authentic music when he plays his guitar. His single 'Good Girls' is another one for the charts, it focuses on the benefit of keeping a good girl, because they don't grow on trees. I really like this music, he is as passionate in his delivery as Bob Marley and Wyclef Jean when they sing. What's magnificent though is his ability to switch right back into his smooth pitch after these crazy belts. Go download the new Cris Cab mixtape Echo Boom NOW HERE.

Galaxy Foamposites, Love or Insanity

With all the madness going on this weekend between these Nike Foamposite Galaxy's and NBA All-Star Weekend, I figured this is a perfect opportunity to get a guest post from my good friend and sneaker connoisseur, Mickey Nassrin.

Just when you think a sneaker release cannot generate any more hype, insanity
or fanaticism than it has in years past, we come across the Galaxy Foamposite. In
a short period of time, this sneaker has gone from photo leaks at industry events to
mythical status. Now there have been releases where sneaker heads camped out for
days, forgone income, abandoned their education and spent their girl friend’s birthday
money in an effort to attain their holy grail. However, there has never been a shoe
which has led individuals to resort to using public restrooms for one week, offering to
trade their car or trade in their entire sneaker collection so as to claim a pair of Galaxy
Foams.

The Foamposite is an iconic sneaker in its own right. Having debuted on the
feet of Penny Hardaway in 1997, it was one of a kind upon first sight and has grown in
popularity over the last few years, namely though undying devotion by Wale. However,
this recent offering with a cosmic graphic printed on its silhouette has driven the beast
out of sneaker heads that are pitching tents in front of Mercer St. in New York. The
hysteria has gotten so much attention that CNN has even documented the process.
Ultimately, this drives home the fact that Nike is as much a marketing organization as it
is an athletic and apparel company. With hours left until the release, EBay sellers are
offering to resell this shoe at fifteen times its value. At the end of the day ask yourself,
what would you give up for a pair of Galaxy Foams?

BULLY Movie Trailer [Video]

With the increase in youth suicides it was only a matter of time before they made a movie about the problem with Bullying. Movies are the perfect way to get people to sit still and listen actually. That's why they make them, like the 2012 movies and what not you know? So here we have it a movie following the lives of kids in trouble with bullies. There's just to much we should already know from our own experiences in school about how kids get treated to kind of understand the premise of the film. Regardless it's definitely a better approach to the issue by going into the actual lives of the bullied themselves. I am sure this will do great in theaters. Here's the full and official release from the movie.

This year, over 13 million American kids will be bullied, making it the most common form of violence young people in the U.S. experience. Directed by Sundance- and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, Bully is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary—at its heart are those with the most at stake and whose stories each represent a different facet of this bullying crisis.

Following five kids and families over the course of a school year, the film confronts bullying’s most tragic outcomes, including the stories of two families who’ve lost children to suicide and a mother who waits to learn the fate of her 14 –year-old daughter, incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With rare access to the Sioux City Community School District, the film also gives an intimate glimpse into school busses, classrooms, cafeterias and even principles offices, offering insight into the often-cruel world of children, as teachers, administrators and parents struggle to find answers.

While the stories examine the dire consequences of bullying, they also give testimony to the courage and strength of the victims of bullying and seek to inspire real changes in the way we deal with bullying as parents, teachers, children, and in society as a whole. Through the power of these stories, Bully aims to be a catalyst for change and to turn the tide on an epidemic of violence that has touched every community in the United States—and far beyond.

Dom O Briggs is an artist, herbalist with a brooklyn state of mind. He is bringing his show to the big leagues with his newest visual, 20 Years, off A Gemini's Tale. Check out our exclusive interview with the artist where he talks about inspirations, the sounds of music and dream collabos. It gets real.

Dom OBriggs Interview

You represent Brooklyn, buthave you lived there your whole life?

Nah. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Leftat age 3 and moved to Brooklyn. I used to live in South Jersey too. Bout 30minutes from Philly. I been in Brooklyn for most of my life though.

Growing up, what music didyou listen to?

I listened to a lot Gospel. I was raised inchurch. Other than that, I listened to whatever my mother, father or the radioplayed. I went to sleep listening to the radio. My mother listened to Mary J,Faith, Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu...things of that nature. My popslistened to Biggie, Tupac, New Edition, Big Pun, Big L, early Bad Boy stuff,etc.. Then, Musiq Soulchild became my favorite artist. He still is. I got thebest of both worlds though.

You’re a unique rapper with alot of talent. Does being creative run in your family?

Thanks. I appreciate that. My mother and auntwere in the choir, I have uncles and cousin who are drummers, pianist andsingers.

Who in your opinion are theleaders of the new school at the moment?

I feel that the leaders of the new school iseveryone that is on their grind right. Who ever is in the studio, or writing orat a show or doing anything art related right now.

You just participated in anevent called the Start It Up Benefit Concert. Explain your involvement?

Haha. Crazy thing is, I missed it. I had tohandle some family business. I performed at the first one though. SamanthaAlexandra. She is a talented singer and a person with a vision I believe in.She is the reason I am apart of it.

You consider yourself anherbalist. How are the herbs on the east coast?

Indeed I am. The botany department in New Yorkis pretty good. Nothing like Cali grown though.

Have you smoked CaliforniaKush?

Yes I have. Its amazing. The dro too. I needto get back out there! Hahaha

Why did you choose DopeNDoper from your upcoming EP as your firstsingle?

It was just a spur of the moment thing. It wasone of the only songs I had recorded for the project at the time. I wanted todrop something to let people know I was working.

Always Inspire(d) EP iscoming March 25, 2012. The title is perfect. Where did it come from?

Its one of my tattoo. I got the tattoo andthought that it would be a good title for my next project.

Is it a concept EP?

Its just a way of lie. Its the way I live.Everything is inspiration. EVERYTHING. In your actions, in other peoplesactions, In things you say, In things other people say...all of it. Me being anartist, everything inspires me. I have a double role as an artists and a fanthough. Other peoples art inspires me and I inspire people with my art. That'sjust how life goes.

Do you think your debutproject, The Sounds Of Music, got the recognition it deserved?

I think it was what it was. I was stillgetting my feet wet with recording and "finding my voice" so tospeak. Plus, I was still fairly new to the music scene or whatever so I didn'ttrip.

If you could work withanybody right now, who would it be?

Mint Condition and Terrace Martin. That wouldbe the sickest collab.

Last May you released AGemini’s Tale. Can we expect anything more from that project?

Nothing too fancy. A couple videos. Video forSuppose To, Gemini Swag, Urkel Musik and whatever else we shoot.  I justgo with the flow.

Next month I hear you will beplaying a show with buzzworthy artist, Emilio Rojas. Did you collaborate on atrack?

Nah,I haven't got the chance to work with him. I met him at DealWithNoDeal (radioshow) but that was that. I respect him and his music though.

Name someone of somethingthat has influenced you your whole life?

Music. It was the only thing that couldn't gowrong.

Thanks for your time Dom O.  You are next in show. Success isinevitable.

Thank You. I appreciate this opportunity.

Since Crystal Castles released their self-titled debut album in 2010, they have been around the world and back. Now two years later, they decide to team up with VsMagazine to release a visual for Suffocation. The song is my personal favorite and the concept shows a dark twist on fashion. Movie 'ZULU' SIgns On Orlando Bloom and Djimon Hounsou

The film ZULU takes place in Cape Town, South Africa. Both actors play police officers assigned to find the killers of an 18 year old girl. Thing is the girl is the daughter of a member of the championship rugby team there the Sprikboks. In the midst of doing so there are clues that lead to the past, as in the past of Africa. Apartheid ring a bell? My guess is this, Orlando Bloom recently saw Safe House and thought hey I'm hot why don't I change my role up and play a detective too. Ryan Reynolds to me has rewritten his resume with Safe House, keep him out of those silly movies please. Last but not least Djimon hasn't done much in a short period of time but it's guaranteed any movie in Africa or about Africans will get this guy some candid frame time. Hey, best of luck to the crew and cast.

Careless World: Rise Of The Last King Drops! Read All About It * Review *

Tyga –Careless World: Rise Of The Last King

Careless World is finally here. His debut No Introduction released in 2008, now it’s time for Tygato release his Young Money / Cash Moneydebut album. Although it has taken him three years to release his debut on thelabel, the wait is worth it. From the cover art to the features and production,I think everything is in place for a classic album. You can’t compare TygaMan to his previously released albumbecause he was much younger at the time. Since then he has grown so much into atop 10 rapper for his unique original style.  Tyga made it clearthat he was going to take over the airwaves. Careless World is jam packed with radio friendly hit singles. Insteadof me listing the track list and reviewing each song, I took a differentapproach. Below I created two lists and picked out the top three tracks that Iam feeling at the moment. Since the album has a majority of radio cuts, I pickedout the top 3 I predict will be all over the radio. #carelessworld #nextinshow

*UPDATE* Careless World: Rise Of The Last King will be pulled from shelves due to an uncleared Martin Luther King sample. Tyga then tweeted and stressed to his fans that, Careless World will be released on Feb. 21

Top 3 PotentialRadio Hits

-      I’m Goneft. Big Sean

Here is another song that you will soon hear all over the radio, markmy words. The production is credited to Boi-1da and Matthew Burnett. Hints ofDrake’s voice are found tagged throughout the song. Also another sample isused, which I was unable to identify. Big Sean lays it down for towards the endof the track and definitely gives Tyga a run for his money.

-      This IsLike ft. Robin Thicke

Surprisingly this is, in my opinion, one of the hottest tracks on thealbum. T Raw stays raw and to top it off superstar production is at hand. BillionaireBoy himself, Pharrell Williams accompanies Polow Da Don and deliver a smoothoperation. Robin Thicke is the dessert to the entrée. His falsetto vocals glazethe hook so well. This track is a favorite of mine and on repeat on the iphoneat this time.

-      For TheFame ft. Chris Brown & Wynter

What can I say about this song…Seriously what can I say? It doesn’treally fit the album other than it will dominate the pop charts. So for that Iappreciate the effort. Chris Brown on anything is platinum status at this pointand newcomer Wynter Gordon fits nice as the female vocals.

Top 3 Songs Next In Show Approves

-      Lil’Homie ft Pharrell

Pharrell Williams is on another level creatively from everyone else inthe world, so when he collaborates with an artist such as Tyga, you know thesong is going to be a hit. This is what we have here. Lil’ Homie is a classicNeptunes original beat goes nice over his T Raw’s flows and Pharrell’s catchyhook. Lets not forget about Chad Hugo the other half of The Neptunes whowithout his production, there would be no hit.

-           DoIt All

Jess Jackson brings soul tothis one. Do It All is so nice. So much going on from the electric guitar, tothe background vocal and samples used. Tyga has created an original sound fromthe ground up. Even “all-mighty”(sarcasm for the lame) Drake bites his swagfrom time to time.

-           Careless World

The self-titled trackCareless World starts the album. I look at track like a 3 part story. Firstpart explains the Rise Of The King. The second part, he discusses his struggle. The third part is when Tyga becomes Tyga. Production is credited to JessJackson. Haven’t heard of the producer until now, but his contribution to the albumis incredible. A breath of fresh air in what hip-hop should sound like.

Inthe end, Careless World: Rise Of The Last King was long awaited, yet worth thewait. Tyga on some other shit, messin with some other shit and whether he stayswith Young Money or not, he will stay creative and proactive. Album in storesFebruary 21, 2012.

Tyrese "Nothing On You" [Video]

Oh yes, the new video for Tyrese has just been released. 'Nothing On You' features Chilli of TLC and of course Tyrese making love. For the guy's it's pretty much a "meh, I wish it was like this for me" type of deal but sadly it isn't. For the ladies it another Tyrese video. The song is FIRE though. Cheers

Next In Show Interviews Greek Indie Band The Finger

Another week, another interview, and this time we got a band from another country. The Finger is female fronted by Hypnelia and is from the second largest city in Greece known as Thessaloniki. In a hurting economy, all this city has to look forward to is beautiful music to uplift their downfall. Fresh from performing, The Finger took some time out to get exclusive with Next In Show. Listen to their EP for free below.

TheFinger x Exclusive Interview
Growing up inGreece, what music did you listen to?
Weall listened to different genres. We have influences that vary from trip hop toheavy metal. Personally I was very influenced by my father, who was a fan ofall the big rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, etc.
How did thefive of you come together to form The Finger?
Weall had previously worked in other projects together. Sotiris, guitarist andproducer of our band, owns a recording studio where I was recording my soloalbum. So we all met in the studio, except for Nick, the drummer, who laterjoined us. We immediately formed a good chemistry and that was during a periodwhen we all wanted to do something else besides our solo projects.
Explain the processyou went through in recording your upcoming album “I Don’t Believe My Eyes”?
FirstI have to say, we had lots of fun making the album. It was a very pleasantexperience and we already have plans on recording the second album! We recorded17 tracks I think, from which we selected 11 for the album. Endless hours ofrecordings, we experimented with some of the tracks so much that we recordedthem 2 and three times, with different lyrics, different melodies etc. Wewanted our debut to be an album we completely love and we worked it until wecould say, "Ok, now, it's done. We don't wanna change a thing"
What is theidea behind the album title?
Thetitle is taken from the first track of the album. We wanted the album title tobe something we all feel. I guess you all know the financial and politicalsituation in Greece right now. Things are changing so fast, we don't have theluxury to trust anyone. Every single politician in Greece says what needs to besaid to secure some votes. We don't believe and we don't trust anyone.
If you couldheadline a tour with one other artist/band, who would it be and why?
Thereare so many great bands out there, this is really difficult to answer! We wouldlove to tour with anyone who is as much excited as we are. Regardless ofgenres!

Besides music, what else goes on in your hometown of Thessaloniki?
Demonstrationsand riots! There isn't much really going on right now. Unfortunately, we haveless shows every year, less festivals, less theatres. I don't know if it cangetter ay worse than it is right now.

Are youplanning on going on tour to promote the album?
Weare planning a tour in Greece for now. We don't really know if we'll be gettingoutside Greece anytime soon. Since we are a DIY band, it's not so easy to plana tour abroad, you'll have to work with booking agencies and since we're notworking with one yet, it's not in our future plans.

What music areyou listening to right now for inspiration?
Atthe moment, we try not to listen to any new staff coming out, so we don't gettoo influenced. But from time to time, we go through some old and favorites.Peter Murphy and The Cure have always been among my favorites. This year Ibelieve is gonna be a great year for music, with so many albums coming out. Iliked "Given to the wild" by the Maccabees. The Killers are releasingan album, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age; I want to hear all of them.

What is yourfavorite part about performing in front of a live audience?
Theapplause! The energy you exchange with the people! The anxiety beforeperforming. Everything.

Have you everbeen to the United States? If so, did you attend any concerts?
Unfortunately,no. But we'd love to be given a chance to perform there! I hear the audience ispretty wild there!

It happens tobe Grammy Weekend out here in Los Angeles. Do you approve of award shows?
Itdepends. Award shows in Greece are guided by major labels. I don't know theGrammys work, but I guess a celebration of music doesn't hurt. At the otherhand, we could all live without them. There are many musicians that getnominated and don't even show up. So, it's really as necessary for themusicians, as it is for major labels.

What is onepiece of advice that could help up and coming artists accomplish their goal?
Youshould really ask an established artist! We haven't achieved anything yet! We're just beginning! If you know a good advice, please tell us! :)
