SXSW came, great performances went down, and it definitely conquered all media for 7 days. Unfortunately Next In Show couldn't make it out this year, but we are planning big things for 2013. A few of my friends and featured artists on our blog made it down and were privelaged enough to perform. L./\ considered it a "great stepping stone in her learning process...". Lyriciss made his return this year to the festival and said "it was bigger for me this year". Ryshon Jones not only met superproducer legend 9th Wonder, but also got to perform at 2 showcases including one opening for Schoolboy Q. Read below my exclusive mini interviews with these three artists.

How was your debut at SXSW?
It was awesome the crowd was on point everything felt good it was the first time I enjoyed a performance of my self. What showcases did you participate in? I was on the bombonem/uheardthatnew stage with sts john conor. laws and a few others How did you end up opening for School Boy Q? i was actually removed from the show wont even say why Besides your own performance, do you think any other performance were buzzworthy? I think by. far 50cent performing was the most popular show. What was it like to meet hip-hop legend 9th Wonder? It was crazy he knew of me we didnt talk much but it was enough for me Do you think SXSW helped grow your fanbase? I dont think I did enough down there but I promise next year will be a whole diffrent ball game

What was it like for you to perform at such an epic festival like SXSW?
Firstly its a blessed experience to be in the presence of so much art and artists. The whole week was a great stepping stone in my learning process and was also beneficial to my growth as an artist. As for my performance it was really dope especially with all these people I never met before.
Everyone who is anyone from the industry was down in Austin, Texas. Who did you meet?
I met and seen a lot of amazing people out in Austin. Meeting Chaundon was so inspiring, but I was mostly excited to meet up with 9th Wonder and Boog Brown. Two every dope and inspirational workers in this industry right now.
Beside your own performance, who else killed the stage?
Of course Kendrick Lamar ripped. But my two favorite performances was at the SOB's 30th Anniversary show when 2 Chainz brought out Kanye West and Big Sean and I wasnt a huge MGK fan before but after his performance I give that guy hella props. He freakin flew from the stage onto a balcony. It was nuts.
What were your expectations about SXSW before going there? I didn't really have many, I kinda knew the deal since we have festivals similar in NY like CMJ. However, my expectations as a whole for Austin was different, cause I was expecting more cowboys. :(
What showcases were you a part of?
I got to rock at the SXMW2 show with GLC, Boog Brown, Lyric Jones, Harmony Muzik and a bunch more. I also got to do some quick freestyle joints at some other spots that I can't remember lol. It was sooooo much going on.
What is one thing you learned about yourself after attending SXSW?
I learned .... that I really love music, that Hip Hop is truly life and that next year.....we go big or go home.

Was this your first time performing at SXSW in Austin, Texas?
Nah, actually my second year doing SXSW. This year was bigger for me, though.
What showcases were you featured in?
I was featured in "The Indie Life" concert that SmCity & Harmony Muzik put together, which featured them as performers, as well as 1982 (Statik Selektah & Termanology), Jon Connor, Rapsody, Maffew Ragazino, Pro'Verb, Nike Nando, Carlitta Durand (along with Jabee), Kooley High, Beanie Sigel, & more. I was also featured in Sean Falyon & Playboy Tre's Red Cup Party, which was under the umbrella of 3 events in one location that my label (Inner Loop Media Group) put together, dubbed "Beats, Rhymes, & Alcohol". The Red Cup Party had me, El Prez, Shawn Chrystopher, Big Rec, Stanza, & more performing. That show was dope as hell to me, because I wasn't quite hip to a lot of the performers before the show, but a lot of them were insane with it. Made me a fan out of a few of them. I’m sure you met a lot of important and influential people. Who did you have the best conversation with?
I can't really call it, man...I like to have some good short conversations with a lot of people, and a lot of that was going on at SXSW. I've never been the type of rapper to just promote to you and walk off...I'd rather chop it up with you for a little bit and pick at your brain. I had some really good conversations with Jabari, Peter Rosenberg, Jabee, & Kane Mayfield, though. Oh, the most shocking short convo was between me and Sha Stimuli...he stopped me on the stairs after I rocked at The Red Cup Party and told me that he was a fan of my music and my live show. That shit meant a lot to me because I'm a Sha Stimuli fan. "Brooklyn Stand Up" still gets heavy plays from me, and I'm not even FROM there. He's telling me he's a fan and I literally said to him, "do you know who YOU are, though?" That was dope. What did you do in your downtime?
I didn't really have much downtime...I found a lil' bit of time to rest at the hotel or chill with my girl, though. Aside from that, I was just walking around and performing or networking.
Was there anything you wish you would have done that maybe you didn’t get to?
More shows. I really wish I could have done more shows, but I couldn't really campaign on that because my USB malfunctioned while I was out there. So I couldn't access my show set at will. I had my DJ there for my Indie Life showcase, then I had to borrow Pro'Verb's USB for my Red Cup Party showcase. If I could have had my own USB and went 100% on getting more shows, I think I would have felt a little more satisfied.
Who did you see that had the best performance?
Hands down, Machine Gun Kelly at the SOBs 30th Anniversary show, at The Belmont. I'm not going to say too much on that...if you see the full footage of his set...the best performance, period. Big Rec is an amazing performer, along with Shawn Chrystopher. Rapsody...Oddisee...I saw a lot of dope live performances. Congratulations on your success at SXSW.

This is one of those albums that is easy to listen to, but also in heavy rotation because of it's melodic charm. Might be an underrated artist now, but for an almost perfect debut album, I can only see things getting better for Niko.

Energy was instantly inducted into my personal 'albums hall of fame'. The album is heavily influenced by Jazz, but brings a modern twist to the equation. Studying vocal jazz in art school, you can see it plays a big role in this album as well as Iman's life.

Although this isn't the first album from rapper Ryshon Jones, Brightest Nights, Darkest Days has closed out 2011 as being one of the most inspiring and influential albums of the year. Such a classic album, but with such a new sound. The catch here is Ryshon has used amazing beats and production with current and buzzworthy samples from artists like The Weeknd, Frank Ocean and Bjork to name a few. When did you first start rapping?
It all started the day my cousin stole this beat tape out of this car and found a tape recorder. I had no idea what I was doing.
How many mixtapes have you released and which is your favorite?
I released 9 mixtapes since 2007. My favorite would have to be MINIMUM WAGE. I did it around a tough part in my life. I had just graduated. My step dad promised to take me to NY in hopes to get me signed, but he never took me. I was workin and got fired, I was broke, stole money from my dad and fell in love with a girl who jus wanted to be friends. It all just built up in one I couldnt look myself in the mirror during that time in my life because I didnt know what I was doing with my life.
Your from Philadelphia. Describe your hometown?
My hometown is everything, I love it and I hate it.The crime makes me sick. Somedays I turn on the news and see people I went to school with either killed or killing someone. There's good here though, the best part i'd say to me is downtown. Just the feeling the people. When you take away all the flashmobs and the crime Philly is great.
What music did you listen to growing up?
It was R&B. As a child I'd just listen to what my mom played on the radio. The first album I ever listened to was DMXIts Dark & Hell is Hot.I loved it. It just amped me up as a kid. I listened to Biggie as well just coming up. I would just listen to what was in front of me or whatever my parents played.
What music do you have playing on your iPod right now?
I listen to alot of Coldplay.I listen to alot of beats as well,Kendrick Lamar,Sigur Ros, Kanye West,Jeezy,Rick Ross,Wale just to name a few.
What was the last song you listened to?
The last song I heard was my own "HomeLessManHunger".
What is a typical studio session for you? (Is it a party or all business?)
I record at home,. My recording process is weird. I dont usually write lyrics down, it's hard for me to sit and write lyrics down since I record at home. If I write lyrics, I have to be on the train, or the bus, or somewhere that isn't my home. Other than that, I just keep notes here and there and just put them together before I record.I just have to be on the move and pace around.
What is Babylon Cartel?
Its a clothing line in Philly ran by Gianni Lee. Their making major moves in the city, and I have alot of respect for Gianni Lee for helping me out on the strength and just wanting to see me win. Look out for Babylon Cartel. Big things coming...

I'd say Casey Veggies,Dom Kennedy,Phil A De,Stalley,Asap Rocky,Machine Gun Kelly,School Boy Q,Gilbere Forte.. That's all I can think of right now.
Your newest release Friday EP, is like a rework of The Weeknds
Thursday mixtape. What inspired you to make that?
Well when Thursday dropped, I thought of doing the Friday mixtape instantly.Then I was talking to Gianni Lee and he was playing The Weeknd and said I should do it and it was crazy because I already thought of it. So I let the idea sit and then I took a day off from work and knocked it out. The songs on there are very true even all the skits. The skits are real, some acted out, but real situations. It's apart of my Shes Leaving For College mixtape I dropped in October of 2010. Pt 2 to Shes Leaving For College will be out next year.
The mixtape as a whole tells a story about the relationship between you and a girl. Could you explain that story?
It's basically; I left my girlfriend, went looking for someone to keep me company. My best friend came on to me I used her,she became clingy and I killed her. I was going crazy at the time,and basically I realized I broke up with the girl I love for the wrong reasons.
How did you get into The Weeknd? Have you met him?
When I first got posted on 2dopeboyz people compared me to him.I never heard of him at the time,I thought he was a rapper.When I first heard his music it didnt catch me.Then one day I sat down and really took it end,and when makn the EP I listened to him for about a week straight.I fell in love with his music,and I felt like hes like the R&B me.I almost pulled the plug on the EP just from my new found love and respect for him.I never met him nor do I think he heard the EP.
What is the story behind your upcomingmixtape Brightest Nights, Darkest Days?
The meaning is, Your days are dark because your awake and you see the harsh reality your in,your nights are bright because when you sleep you cant feel any pain.
I saw the visual for Homeless Man Hunger. It's super raw. Was the concept your own idea?
Yes I had it in my head for a while finally got it out, Mark Goodlife added some tweaks to it as well. Dope Director.
What is next for you and your career?
Getting Brightest Nights, Darkest Days out.

I wish man ,I wish.
Do you enjoy rapper life?
Somewhat, working at my job really takes alot out of me. It hurts my creativity because I'm always exhausted. Other than that im happy to have my music on the platform I been trying to get on for years. With being on the blogs and just twitter, seeing people tweet about falling asleep listening to me. People telling me how my music keeps them sane. Meeting new people, becoming close to people I already know and etc.
I saw the clip of the woman who was flashing you at one of your shows. Did you link up with her after the show?
No I didnt,I gave her her glasses back,and I bounced.
Is family important to you?
Yes...but sometimes it is what it is.
Are you an only child?
I have 2sisters
What do they think of you as a rapper?
It was hard to convince them. I was shy they saw it as something that would fade. I can honestly say I been proving them wrong lately. My mom and my dad were against it strongly and wanted me to go to school.I never heard my mom say she's proud of me...never ever, until the day she saw me in the XXL magazine.It meant something to me. It's something I'll never forget. She told me she's never seen me work this hard for something before.
What in your opinion is the key to success?
I dont think there's an actual KEY to success. I think success is like life; It's what you make it.I haven't really made money off my music yet, but I had someone write me telling me how my music helps him feel closer to a friend he lost due to drugs.I had someone tell me my music keeps him from popping pills and that its a humanity high. All of that is a success to me because that shit is way bigger then money and fame.To know that im literally having an effect on people is a success to me. If I'm not working anymore and I'm touring making a little bit of money, drop an album and it flops, but yet I still have a core fanbase, thats a success to me.
